About this tour

Embarking on a **3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga** is a journey that takes you through some of the most captivating landscapes Morocco has to offer, blending the vibrant energy of city life with the serene beauty of the desert. This adventure, which covers vast distances and diverse terrains, provides an unparalleled opportunity to experience the true essence of Morocco—from the bustling souks of Marrakech, through the majestic peaks of the Atlas Mountains, to the rolling sand dunes of the Sahara Desert. The journey begins in the dynamic city of Marrakech, a place where modernity meets tradition. After an early morning departure, travelers leave behind the city’s maze-like medina and lively markets, heading towards the imposing High Atlas Mountains. The road, known as Tizi n’Tichka Pass, is the highest in Morocco and offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and remote Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides. The winding roads and dramatic landscapes make the drive an experience in itself, with each turn revealing new and stunning vistas that seem to defy the barren environment.

As the journey continues, the route descends into the semi-arid plains of the Ouarzazate region, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Desert.” This area is famous for its cinematic landscapes and has been the backdrop for numerous films and television shows. A highlight of this part of the **3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga** is a visit to Ait Benhaddou, an ancient fortified village, or ksar, that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ksar, with its earthen clay architecture, is perched on a hilltop and surrounded by high walls. Its maze of narrow alleyways and majestic kasbahs, or fortified homes, transport visitors back in time. Ait Benhaddou is a stunning example of traditional Moroccan architecture and a reminder of the region’s strategic importance in centuries past, when it was a key stop for caravans traveling between Marrakech and the Sahara.

Leaving Ait Benhaddou behind, the tour continues towards the city of Ouarzazate itself, often called the “Hollywood of Africa” due to its many film studios. Here, visitors can explore the impressive Taourirt Kasbah, a former residence of the powerful Glaoui family, and learn more about the history and culture of the region. The journey then heads towards the lush Dades Valley, often referred to as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs” due to the many traditional Berber fortresses that dot the landscape. This area is also known for its fertile fields and rose gardens, which bloom in abundance during the spring. The first day of the **3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga** typically ends in the Dades Gorge or nearby Todra Gorge, where towering limestone cliffs create a dramatic setting that is perfect for an evening walk or a peaceful night under the stars in a traditional guesthouse.

The second day of the tour begins with a drive through the scenic Todra Gorge, where the high walls of the canyon provide a stunning contrast to the clear blue sky above. This part of the journey is particularly popular with rock climbers and nature enthusiasts, who come to admire the sheer beauty and tranquility of the area. As the tour progresses, the landscape begins to change once again, becoming more arid and desert-like. This is the gateway to the Sahara, and the anticipation builds as the road approaches the town of Erfoud, known for its fossils and as a starting point for desert excursions. The journey continues through the vast and starkly beautiful Ziz Valley, with its impressive oasis and date palm groves, before finally reaching the edge of the **desert Merzouga**.

Arriving in Merzouga, a small village on the edge of the Sahara Desert, is a moment that many travelers consider the highlight of their **3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga**. The village itself is charming and welcoming, but it is the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi that steal the show. These dunes, some of which reach heights of over 150 meters, stretch out into the horizon, creating a stunning sea of orange sand. As the sun begins to set, casting long shadows and bathing the desert in a warm, golden glow, it is time to embark on a camel trek into the heart of the dunes. Riding a camel through the silent, undulating sands of the **desert Merzouga** is an experience like no other, offering a chance to truly disconnect from the outside world and immerse oneself in the timeless beauty of the Sahara.

The camel trek leads to a traditional Berber camp nestled among the dunes, where visitors are welcomed with mint tea and the warm hospitality of the local people. The evening is spent enjoying a delicious dinner under the stars, accompanied by traditional Berber music played on drums and other instruments. The campfire, the vastness of the desert, and the twinkling stars overhead create a magical atmosphere that is difficult to describe and impossible to forget. For many, this night spent in the **desert Merzouga** is the highlight of their time in Morocco, offering a deep sense of peace and connection to the natural world.

The final day of the **3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga** begins with a spectacular sunrise over the dunes. The early morning light transforms the desert, painting the sands in shades of pink, purple, and gold. After breakfast at the camp, it is time to bid farewell to the Sahara and begin the journey back to Marrakech. The return route offers the opportunity to see more of Morocco’s diverse landscapes, including stops at the ancient town of Rissani, known for its bustling market and historic significance, and the beautiful Draa Valley, famous for its palm groves and ancient kasbahs. As the tour makes its way back over the Atlas Mountains, there is time to reflect on the incredible experiences of the past three days, from the high mountain passes and lush valleys to the mesmerizing dunes of the **desert Merzouga**.

In conclusion, a **3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga** is more than just a trip through Morocco’s diverse landscapes; it is a journey into the heart and soul of the country. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality of Morocco in a way that few other experiences can match. Whether you are drawn by the allure of the Sahara, the charm of the Berber villages, or the stunning scenery along the way, this tour is an unforgettable adventure that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

Our journey kicks off with traversing the High Atlas Mountains, passing through a succession of Berber villages. Upon crossing the Tizi Ntichka peak, we proceed to the UNESCO world heritage village of Ait Ben Haddou—a collection of recently restored Kasbahs renowned for being cinematic backdrops in films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and the Jewel of the Nile.

After a local restaurant lunch, our expedition continues to Ouarzazate and then to the Skoura oasis. Here, a halt at the Kasbah museum of Amridil provides insights into Moroccan Kasbah architecture, the lifestyle of its inhabitants, and the irrigation systems in the Moroccan oases. Our journey progresses to Klaa Mgouna, celebrated for its Damascus roses cultivation, concluding in the Dades Valley where we spend our initial night at a welcoming local guest house or hotel.

Day 2 Dades valley – Todra valley – Merzouga

Following breakfast, we will travel down the famous 1001 Kasbahs road to the Berber village of Tinghir. After arriving at Tinghir, enjoy a leisurely one-hour walk along the riverside oasis that leads to the Todgha canyons. After lunch at a nearby restaurant, we continue our journey to the holy town of Rissani, which is the ancestral home of the present royal family of Morocco. Should we have the opportunity, we may visit the tomb of Moulay Ali Cherif, the Alouettes' grandfather and the ancestor of Morocco's King Mohammed VI.

We head toward Merzouga in the middle of the day, when there will be an important shift in the scenery. When we arrive, we'll meet up with our camel caravans for a thrilling hike across the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, where we'll be able to take in the breathtaking display of a sunset that changes the surrounding shades. We'll arrive at our desert camp just before evening, where you can have a Moroccan meal outside while listening to the rhythms of the local nomads beating their drums. Stay the night in your own private camper in the desert.
